A Feeling for Physics

an outreach activity proposed in collaboration with the "Université des Enfants"

This activity was aimed at primary school level, hence it was (for this time) given only in French

Ressentir la Physique

A series of activities giving a sense of physics laws, or of the scientific procedure

proposed by Jean-Marie Frère , Laura Lopez Honorez, Pierre Kimus
sous l'oeil de François Englert,  Nobel 2013

Presented first on February 18th and 25th, 2023

a brief description

In a series of experiments , students experiment the "simple machines" :
How do I lift that very heavy bag?
By using levers, pulleys, an incline plane or an inflatable inner tube they realize that a gain in "force" is possible ,
making the task possible, but at the cost of a longer displacement (a weaker effort on a longer distance).
This is the basis of the concept of conservation of energy .

In a second set of experiments, they practice with a toy arrow launcher to measure the distance
flown for a given angle, and establish a graphic.
Using this empirical evidence, they work out at which angle they must aim to reach a given target.
